STOL-Grasshoppers DS1 lose
from Eurosped Twente
STOL-Grasshoppers lost their
home game against Eurosped Twente
by 69-82. The team from Tubbergen demonstrated (in a
well-filled Cleijn Duin) that they are, as yet, too
strong for the ladies from Katwijk.
STOL-Grasshoppers don’t start
strong in the match. A few cases of ball loss put them quickly behind. They
compose themselves, and in the 4th minute scores by Ingrid v.d. Plas
and Julia Duikman tie the score at 6-6. In the 5th
minute, Meghan Hutchens makes her debut by STOL-Grasshoppers. Eurosped makes a couple of easy scores and take a lead at
6-13. The home team plays sloppily, but the scoring goes pretty much equally. At
the end of the period, it’s 16-23.
STOL-Grasshoppers begin much
stronger in the second period. With fast play and successful actions, they
manage to catch up. Via 3-pointers by Missy Mitidiero,
Rianne Philippo, and Anouk Breel, the score half way through the period is
26-27. Rianne Philippo falls out with a knee injury. In the 8th
minute, STOL-Grasshoppers take a small lead of 34-33. Scores by Anouk Breel and
Meghan Hutchens take the score at halftime to 39-41.
The third period begins with 3
missed shots by STOL-Grasshoppers. Then Julia Dijkman manages a score and Eurosped makes an offensive foul against Charley Kraustauber. A nice drive to the board by Julia Dijkman
delivers another score. The strong centers from Eurosped are granted too much room and make grateful use of
it. In the fourth minute, it’s 45-52. A nice assist by Meghan
Hutches provides a score by Miranda Harteveld. Eline Kraaijenoord scores and
shortly after pulls down a nice defensive rebound. The Eurosped
centers take their positions well and keep on
scoring. The STOL-Grasshoppers offensive plays are not successful, and 3 times
they don’t beat the 24 second buzzer. In the 8th minute, the score
is 54-61. A score by Missy Mitidiero, followed by an
offensive foul by the opponent, brought the score to 56-64 at the end of the
period.
Eurosped begins the
scoring in the last period. Their centers are fouled
on a number of times, and they successfully make their free throws. A 3-pointer
by Willeke Krijgsman and a score by Karin Kuijt keep STOL-Grasshoppers in the
race. Then a number of open chances under the board are missed, and the shots
are not falling. Eurosped widens their lead of 64-78
in the 6th minute. Scores by STOL-Grasshoppers are followed by ball
loss, so Eurosped has no worries about losing their
lead. It’s over and out for STOL-Grasshoppers when they start taking fast shots
and fail in rebounding. The match ends at 69-82.
Coach Bo Melis, sitting in the bleachers for the last
time in connection with his three game suspension, was satisfied with the debut
of Meghan Hutchens. “Despite the fact that she misses playing experience with
us, she’s demonstrated that she’ll be an asset to the team: we expect steady
improvement during the season.”
